Lexus GS

The Lexus GS is a rear-wheel drive, luxury “sport” sedan that competes with the Mercedes E-class and BMW 5-series. The natural GS-series competitor to the W210 is the second generation JZS160, which was launched in North America in 1998 and sold until 2005.

Car magazines like Car and Driver and Road and Track often criticize Lexuses (Lexii?) for lacking character, soul, or personality. (If you have difficulty understanding how a car can have soul, then the Lexus is probably the right choice for you!) What the Lexus lacks in Jaguar-like soul, it makes up for in reliability and build quality. The Lexus GS is probably as close to completely trouble-free as you’re going to get. Despite lacking soul, the GS was named Motor Trend’s Import Car of the Year and held a slot on Car and Driver’s Ten Best list 1998 to 2000.

The GS was available with two engine choices in the U.S: the 220 HP 3.0L inline-6 GS300 and the 300 HP 4.0L V8 GS400. Both are wonderful engines. The GS300 is roughly comparable to the Mercedes E320/BMW 528i and the GS400 lines up with the E430/540i.
